last a lifetime. Dentists use different substances in repair, and the parts of teeth that are damaged and restored will vary among patients. As a result, the set of dental fillings a patient receives over time are unique to that person. Since teeth are permanently modified when cavities are filled or when a chipped tooth has an artificial crown, a person’s tooth pattern is forever changed by dental work.

Even without dentistry modifications, genetic variations among people make their teeth different. Some people have stronger and thicker enamel than others, tooth crowns can vary in size and shape, and the roots of teeth can differ in their length and curvature. Dental professionals document a patient’s teeth in written charts and X-rays. In preparation for braces and other dental procedures, dentists will make casts of an individual’s teeth. The casts are often held in storage and become part of a person’s dental file. Just like any other medical history, dental records become an important and unique source of information about someone’s body. For this reason, tooth anatomy and dental work are valuable in forensic identification.
